Oakland Athletics History:     The strongest minor league of the 1890's was the Western League of Ban Johnson. The league was renamed the American Baseball League in 1900, and declared itself a major league in 1901, expanding into cities like Philadelphia where they could compete directly for National League fans with teams like the Phillies.     Johnson asked Milwaukee manager Connie Mack to lead the new Philadelphia Athletics, and Mack received a 25% interest in the club. Mack went on to manage the A's for 50 years (longer than any other manager), and became majority owner of the team in 1940.     Their opening season the A's lured Nap Lajoie from the Phillies with a $4,000 contract, and Nap lead the league with 14 home runs, 125 RBI, and a .422 batting average (still the AL record). In 1902 the A's won their first AL pennant.     In 1954 The A's were sold to Arnold Johnson and became the Kansas City Athletics. In Missouri, the A's suffered through 13 straight losing seasons, before moving to California in 1968 as the Oakland A's, bringing with them Catfish Hunter, Sal Bando, and Bert Campaneris.
