The Boston Red Sox were originally the Boston Somersets, named after their original owner, Charles W. Somers. The team was founded in 1901, the same year that the new American League began competing openly with the established National League. Upon being sold to Henry J. Killilea they were renamed the Boston Pilgrims. The Pilgrims won their first pennant in 1903, and won the very first World Series that year. They won the pennant again the following year, but the NL champion Giants manager John McGraw refused to play them, due to his feud with AL founder Ban Johnson. In 1905 the Pilgrims became the Boston Puritans, and in 1907 finally adopted the name Red Sox. The Red Sox began playing in the new Fenway Park on April 20th, 1912. On May 6th, 1915, Red Sox pitcher Babe Ruth hit his first major league home run against the Yankees Jack Warhop, but Ruth and the Sox lost the game in the 13th inning.
