Martina suffered from a strained tendon running along the sole of her right foot. This injury was deemed "not serious" at the time, but Martina had only recently recovered from surgery for torn ligaments in her right ankle in late 2001. |
In mid-May, Martina Hingis was found to have 1 torn and 3 loose ligaments in her left ankle, which required surgery. Martina was also suffering from persistent pain and inflammation problems. Anna was going to partner with Belgian Els Callens at the Italian Open, but Anna strained a right thigh muscle in singles, and they withdrew without playing a match. | |||||
