    (January 2, 2002) Anna Kournikova defeated Amy Frazier 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the ASB Bank Classic. Anna will play Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland in a quarterfinal. This match is taking place today (Jan. 2 in the US, Jan. 3 in New Zealand), and started at 3:45 PST (daily schedule). The tournament website DOES have a primitive WEBCAM. If she wins, Anna will face either Israeli Anna Smashnova or Annabel Medina Garrigues of Spain in a semifinal. 3rd-seeded Anne Kremer is the top ranked player to make it to the quarterfinals (singles brackets). On Tuesday, Jan. 1, Anna defeated Cara Black 7-6 (6), 6-2.

    (Jan. 3) Anna Kournikova defeated Emmanuelle Gagliardi in the quarterfinals of the ASB Bank Classic. Anna lost the first set and was trailing 4-1 in the second, before recovering to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Anna said: "She was playing great... I made too many unforced errors in the first set and I was fighting, trying to find my game." Anna will now face Anna Smashnova of Israel in a semifinal. "She's very tough and I'll have to play my best tennis to beat her," Anna remarked. This match is taking place today (Jan. 3 in the US, Jan. 4 in New Zealand), at 3:00 PST (daily schedule).     (Jan. 3) Israeli Anna Smashnova defeated Anna Kournikova 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals of the ASB Bank Classic in Auckland, New Zealand on Jan. 4/2002. Anna K. said: "I didn't really play my game... We both kept the ball in play too long, which is how she wanted it... Today wasn't so good, but it helps me get ready for the Australian Open." Smashnova then defeated Tatiana Panova in the final (singles brackets). Anna K. had won 5 straight matches and 7 of her last 8 (including exhibitions) before today's loss.

    (Jan. 5) Anna Kournikova is scheduled to play in next week's Adidas International in Sydney, Australia. Anna's usual doubles partner (and fellow Adidas endorsee) Martina Hingis will also be there. Hingis was last year's singles champion. The draws are to be decided today.

    (Jan. 6) Anna Kournikova is will play Spaniard Angeles Montolio in the first round of the Adidas International at 4 PM PST today in Sydney, Australia (Monday, Jan. 7 there). Anna has a tough draw, if she wins, she must face 4th seed Serena Williams in the second round.     (Jan. 8) Serena Williams defeated Anna Kournikova 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at the Adidas International in Sydney, Australia. Anna said: "I'm just going to take positive things out of this match and then continue working on what I have to do." And Serena remarked: "She did a lot of good things, she's ranked 60-something in the world, she shouldn't be ranked that because she's a better player than that, for sure." Anna and Martina Hingis will play a doubles quarterfinal today vs. Henrieta Nagyova and Iroda Tulyaganova (brackets, .pdf).

    (Jan. 11) Martina Hingis suffered from heat exhaustion and a pinched thigh muscle during her singles semifinal match, forcing her and Anna Kournikova to withdraw from their doubles final against Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs at the Adidas International in Sydney, Australia. Martina defeated Kim Clijsters 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, and had to save herself for her singles final today against Meghann Shaughnessy (brackets, .pdf).

    (Jan. 15) 6th seed Justine Henin won her 1st round match vs. Anna Kournikova at the Australian Open 6-2, 7-5. After a slow start in the 1st set, Anna was ahead a break at 3-1 in the 2nd. But Henin broke back immediately, and then broke Anna's serve at 5-5. Anna said: "I wasn't playing well in general. I started to play better in the second set, but she lifted her game and I didn't play well on the important points."     (Jan. 24) Anna Kournikova and Martina Hingis defeated top-seeded Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs 6-7(5) 6-1 6-0 in their doubles semifinal at the Australian Open. Today, Anna and Martina will play 13th seeded Daniela Hantuchova and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in the final. This will be the 2nd match today at Rod Laver Arena (the 1st match is at 11AM Friday in Melbourne = 4PM Thursday PST).

    (Jan. 25) Anna Kournikova and Martina Hingis won the doubles championship at the Australian Open over Daniela Hantuchova and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-1. Asked about Martina, Anna said: "...she's a great champion and it's just really great and nice that we get along so well and that we make such a good team" (post match interview text and video).

    (Jan. 28) This week Anna Kournikova will play in the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, as will her doubles partner Martina Hingis, but they are NOT entered in doubles at this tournament.. Anna will face Christina Torrens-Valero in the 1st round. This will be the last match of the day at Court #1, not before 5PM Tuesday (in Japan = 12 Midnight Monday night PST).

    (Jan. 29) Anna Kournikova defeated Christina Torrens-Valero 6-3, 6-0 in the 1st round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Anna said: "The first set was pretty close, but I think it just got to a point where I opened up a lead and it was really difficult for her to come back." Anna will play either Elena Dementieva or Saori Obata in the 2nd round tomorrow. In later rounds, Anna could face Jelena Dokic, Monica Seles, and finally, Martina Hingis. Anna and Martina are NOT entered in doubles at this tournament. Martina said: "I've played a lot of tennis this year and I think I need a rest."

    (Jan. 30) Today, Anna Kournikova will play Elena Dementieva in the 2nd round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Both women are Russian, but they have never played each other before. "It will be very interesting for both of us," Dementieva said. This will a late match on Court #1, not before 5PM Thursday (in Japan = 12 Midnight Wednesday night PST) (schedule/scoreboard).

    (Jan. 31) Anna Kournikova defeated Elena Dementieva 7-6(4), 7-6(5) in the 2nd round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. "I think this is one of the best matches since my comeback, if not the best," said Anna, who trailed 0-3 in the 2nd set before fighting back to 4-4. Today, Anna will play Anne Kremer in a quarterfinal (Kremer defeated Jelena Dokic 7-5, 6-2). This will be the 4th match of the day, late this evening in the US (schedule/scoreboard). Anna and Martina Hingis are NOT entered in doubles at this tournament.

(Feb. 1) Anna Kournikova defeated Anne Kremer 6-4, 6-2 in a quarterfinal of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Anna said: "I played well today in both sets and I'm looking forward to playing Monica tomorrow." Today, Anna will play Monica Seles in a semifinal (Seles defeated Alexandra Stevenson 7-6(9), 7-6(9)). This will be the 2nd match of the day, about 9 or 10 PM PST this evening in the US (schedule/scoreboard). Anna has won only once in 5 previous matches with Seles. The other semi pits Martina Hingis against Silvia Farina Elia.

    (Feb. 2) 10th-ranked Monica Seles defeated Anna Kournikova 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a semifinal of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Anna said: "Monica was just stronger mentally... I don't think that I have anything to be disappointed about. I am playing much better than I did two weeks ago in the beginning of the year. I think I am starting to find my game and I am happy about this tournament" (full interview). Today, Seles will play Martina Hingis in the final. (schedule/scoreboard). Anna and Martina are NOT entered in doubles at this tournament, and neither is entered in next week's Gaz tournament.

    (Feb. 5) Anna Kournikova defeated qualifier Emanuelle Gagliardi 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4 today in the first round of the Gaz de France in Paris. Anna was down 3-0 in the 2nd set before recovering to win the match, which lasted over 2 hours. Anna had not been listed to play in the tournament, but turned up in a wild card berth. Anna said she was struggling with jet lag: "I was sleeping. It was a really strange match, I don't remember it very well."

    (Feb. 6) Amélie Mauresmo of France defeated Anna Kournikova today, 6-3, 7-5, in the 2nd round of the Gaz de France in Paris. Mauresmo is the 3rd seed at Gaz, and 8th ranked in the world. Anna, who led 5-2 in the 2nd set but couldn't hang on, said: "I really need more consistency. I made far too many unforced errors... I just need to play more and concentrate."

    (Feb. 12) Anna Kournikova defeated 36th-ranked Marlene Weingartner 6-2, 6-1 today in the 1st round of the Proximus Diamond Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The 1st set was even at 2-2, and then Anna won 10 of the next 11 games. Note: Some news stories report Anna withdrawing from this week's WTA event in Qatar due to "exhaustion", but she is simply playing in Belgium instead.

    (Feb. 13) Venus Williams defeated Anna Kournikova 7-5, 6-0 today, in the 2nd round of the Proximus Diamond Games in Antwerp, Belgium. Venus said: "Anna played real well," and Anna said: "I'm positive about it. It was a great set and it showed I can hold my own against the No. 2 in the world." In the 1st round, Anna defeated 36th-ranked Marlene Weingartner 6-2, 6-1. Anna is not scheduled to play with vacationing doubles partner Martina Hingis again until Indian Wells, March 4th-11th.

    (Feb. 18) Anna Kournikova defeated 88th-ranked Selima Sfar of Tunisia 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the the 1st round of the Dubai Tennis Championships today. After a fall, Anna was troubled by pain in her left foot, which sustained a stress fracture last year. Anna said: "I fell and it happened to be on the same foot and that was on my mind in the tiebreak...it was difficult because my mind was thinking about my body, not about the game."

    (Feb. 19) Venus Williams defeated Anna Kournkova 6-2, 7(6)-6(3) in the the 2nd round of the Dubai Tennis Championships today. Anna said: "The positive thing is that compared to the way I was playing at the end of last year I'm playing much better."
