Post-loss interview: Q. Do you think it's impossible for you to reach the No. 1 again or to win a Grand Slam?... MARTINA HINGIS: I don't think so. I mean, like I said, it's -- how can you say that? Come on (laughing). |

6-4, 6-2 3-6, 1-6 |
After her 2nd round loss to Elena Dementieva, Martina said she was still suffering from persistent pain and inflammation problems. Martina withdrew from the following week's Swisscom Challenge in Zurich (her home tourney), and then from the rest of the tourneys for the year. By early 2003, Martina had decided that it was unlikely she would ever play WTA Tour tennis again.
In February 2005, Martina did enter one tourney, in Pattaya, Thailand, but lost in the 1st round to Marlene Weingartner. She again said she had no plans to return to the Tour.
But Martina did decide to return to WTA play after a very successful season of World Team Tennis in the summer of 2005. After leading her team, the New York Sportimes, to the WTT title, and being declared WTT finals MVP, Martina announced in December, 2005, that she would return to play at the start of the WTA 2006 season. And so she did.
