About WTA Post-Match Press Conferences:

At each tournament there are at least two pleasant WTA Tour "public relations coordinators" on hand to escort the players from the court to the locker room and then to the press interview room. They do this cheerfully and efficiently, but with the covert alertness of wardens making sure that the jailbirds don't make a break for it en route to the chapel.

Attendance at post-match press conferences is obligatory. These group sessions make it easier for reporters to do their jobs, and they are a good public relations tool for the tour. But mandatory press conferences can be farcical, dehumanizing experiences for all concerned...

Imagine being... forced to sit before fifty reporters who are mostly strangers to you, and having to answer questions about how you blew a match, how you feel about your parents, how much pressure you feel to win a big one...

The Courts of Babylon: Tales of Greed and Glory in a Harsh New World of Professional Tennis
by Peter Bodo
Scribner; ISBN: 0684812967; (June 1995, out of print) usually available used from ABE Books

While the tennis press unfailingly plays it straight when it questions the ATP players, no topic seems to be off limits to women in the interview room. What's the status of your love life? What did you think of your opponents outfit? Did you go shopping yesterday?... At its best, the "anything goes" atmosphere personalizes the competitors, supplements their on-court persona... At its worst, these free-for-alls trespass the bounds of journalistic integrity, trivialize the sport, and put the players in awkward positions.
